Be cautious on green!

Irish Advanced Motorists has warned that a green light only means 'go' if it is clear to do so.

The organisation, which trains drivers to advanced standard, also reminds that an amber light doesn’t mean “speed up to get across the lights before they change to red”. It mean that you must stop unless you are so close to the line that stopping would be dangerous.

It is therefore important to check your mirrors as you approach a 'stale' green light to identify the position of any following traffic. You need to take this into consideration when deciding if it is actually safe to stop. There is little point in you stopping and the vehicle behind running into the back of you.

Also, a green light does not guarantee your safety. It is essential to make sure that nobody is breaking the lights and the only way to do this is to check in all directions before you enter the junction. If your vision is obscured because of other vehicles or buildings, slow down accordingly. TW
