Higher VRT for large cars

The Government is to increase vehicle registration tax (VRT) on larger cars, as part of a new plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

The detail of the increased tax isn't yet known, or when it will be implemented.

Ireland already has one of the most penal car tax systems in the EU.

Environment minister Dick Roche says he will also put a levy on incandescent light bulbs, aimed at forcing people to use the more expensive compact flourescent lights (CFL).

A 15 million euros public awareness campaign will be launched and a Climate Change Commission will be created. BB.
