by Brian Byrne. Volkswagen is considering a 'mild hybrid' version of its Jetta for the North American market to protect the nameplate's sales from Toyota's Prius.
A 'mild' hybrid system has its petrol engine as its primary drive, with help from an electric motor.
The new generation Jetta is built in Mexico, and the hybrid version's petrol engine would be a 1.6-litre unit outputting 115bhp.
The Jetta is VW's biggest selling model in the US market.
