New S Class will be biggest in class

Brian Byrne. When the new-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class is launched in October it will regain its former attribute of being both the largest and most expensive sedan in its segment.

This follows a period of restraint since the eight-year reign of the W140 version launched in 1990. The next car was significantly downsized in length and power following criticism.

The new car will have a top-end engine with 517hp, and will also beat its rivals at entrey-level power of 272hp.

It will also have radar parking sensors as standard, better than the cheaper ultrasonic currently used.
