Volkswagen is to announce a new series of engines at the Frankfurt Motor Show which will revolutionise small-car performance.
The first will be a 1.4-litre unit with a power output of 170hp, thanks to being supercharged. It will initially be available in the Golf, the Golf Plus, the Touran and possibly even the Passat.
A VW specialist told Irish Car News that a 130hp variant of the engine will follow later, and that the increased power will not be at the expense of fuel consumption.
The move to supercharging comes as Mercedes-Benz is phasing out the technology in favour of turbocharging, now deeming the latter to be sufficiently refined to use in its petrol engines. Brian Byrne.
