by Brian Byrne. Volvo Car Ireland will be one of the sponsors of this year’s Polar Expedition by Irish Yacht Northabout, which will attempt to complete a circumnavigation of the North Polar Ice Cap.
Previously the Northabout successfully navigated the North West Passage and, in 2004, an attempt was made on the North East Passage. Unfortunately, this did not succeed due to adverse ice conditions around Cape Chelyuskin – the most northerly point of Russia.
The crew will fly out to Russia on Sunday 7 August to ready it for this year’s adventure.
Skippered by Jarlath Cunnane (builder of Northabout), the boat’s crew will consist of Kevin Cronin from Dublin, Colm Brogan from Kinvara, Gary Finnegan from Dublin, Dr Michael Brogan from Ballyhaunis, Rory Casey from Castlebar and Vladislav Samoilovich.
The expedition’s progress can be seen here.
