Year on year car sales were up 11.4 percent at the end of 2005, or 171,732 units against 154,136 in 2004.
About 130,000 old cars were scrapped in the same year, according to an estimate by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).
Toyota sold 24,260 cars during 2005, followed by Ford with 20,413 and Volkswagen with 14,653 cars.
