The Irish Advanced Motorists organisation has welcomed the introduction of 31 additional penalty points for driving offences.
IAM Director Mike Kavanagh said they will provide a much needed deterrent, and also make enforcement easier.
He also said that a programme of enforcement, while welcomed, should be combined with a 'greater education initiative'.
IAM promotes public awareness of road safety and aims to influence road-user behaviour through the IAM Advanced Driving Test.
