Volkswagen is to produce twenty new models over the next five years, ten of which will be in segments where the brand doesn't currently compete.
Among them will be a roadster based on the Concept R shown at Frankfurt in 2003, and a four-door coupe to fit between the Passat and the Phaeton.
The company may have to find a partner for development of the roadster because the mid-engine/rear drive format doesn't fit with any of VW's current platforms.
Meanwhile, the company has brought forward by a year plans for the next generation of the Golf, to 2008.
The Golf has met strong competition from the Opel Astra and the second generation Ford Focus.
