EU to make ESP mandatory

The European Union is to mirror an American plan that electronic stability control systems will be mandatory on all cars from 2012.

Currently only 42 percent of new cars in the EU come with ESC as standard, and then only at the upper end of the market.

The systems can reduce the risk of accidents by as much as 20 percent, especially in wet or icy conditions.

Though carmakers blame a lack of consumer awareness for the low penetration of the systems, the largest provider of ESC says it is because the practice of bundling it with other options and specifications makes it inaccessible to many motorists.

Bosch Chassis Systems Control says the 300 euros systems should be available on every car and on every version.

Both the European Commission and the US National Highways and Transportation Safety Authority now plan to make ESC mandatory by 2012. But by 2010 the US market is expected to lead Europe in penetration of the systems at 82 percent compared to 61 percent. BB.
