NI gets tough on mobiles

People using their mobile phones while driving or not wearing seatbelts are among those being targeted by tougher penalties in Northern Ireland.

From June 27, car drivers using a hand-held mobile will be liable for three penalty points and a maximum fine of £1,000, lorry, bus and coach drivers a £2,500 fine. The current fixed penalty of £30 will increase to £60 in July.

Drivers who fail to wear a seatbelt or ensure that child passengers use them will also receive penalty points. The fine on conviction for carrying a child unbelted in the back of a car will increase to a maximum £500. BB.
