Topaz 'driver awake' scheme

The Topaz chain of filling stations are cooperating with the Road Safety Authority to help drivers stay awake over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

The company will give away up to 20,000 free cups of tea and coffee at their network of sites.

Up to one in five collisions are directly attributable to driver fatigue, according to Danny Murray, CEO of Topaz. "It is as dangerous as driving above the legal alcohol limit. But over the weekend, all a driver has to do is turn up at a Topaz outlet and show their car keys and have a free tea or coffee, and take a rest from the wheel. If it saves even one life, it will have been worth it."

The scheme was launched this morning at the Topaz Filling Station on the N7 at Kill, Co Kildare.
