Kairouan, which originally got its name from ‘camp’ or ‘resting place’ is currently regarded as the third holiest city in the Islamic world after Mecca and Medina as a place of pilgrimage.
Kairouan joins a host of leading cities that have previously held the prestigious title including Fez, Alexandria and Tripoli all chosen by the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
To celebrate, Kairouan is hosting the cultural exhibition ‘Mediterranean civilisation: innovation, exchange and communication’ until 31 March 2009.
The exhibition which will feature historic documents, photography and audio presentations, is hosted by the Rekada Museum of Islamic Arts and Civilisation, organised by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage Preservation and part of the Quntara Euromed project.
Kairouan is home to The Great Mosque. Tunisia is only a two and a half hour flight from London and offers an awe-inspiring range of tourist attractions and opportunities including miles of beautiful beaches, a millennium of history, golf courses, Thalassotherapy spas, the mysterious Sahara and much more besides.
