The company announced this at the Detroit Motor Show, when it revealed the next generation Prius, whose hybrid system is an improved version of the current model.
The ‘plug-in’ announcement was something of a surprise, as that version wasn’t due for another year. But it will now be available later this year, stealing a march on GM’s Chevy Volt, promised for late next year.
The new generation Prius will still come equipped with a nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) battery pack and no plug, but Toyota says that it is "plug-in ready"-- designed and engineered to accept a lighter lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged from the grid.
