'Seven in 10 cars need safety work'

Almost seven out of 10 vehicles inspected as part a free safety check at Advance Pitstop centres during Irish Road Safety Week in October 2008 were found to need some basic safety work.

On foot of the results, Advance Pitstop supported by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), has made this 5-point free safety check available in all its branches for the remainder of 2009.

The biggest problem area was vehicle lighting with 28 percent of the vehicles inspected having a problem. Tyres were next on the list with 21 percent of vehicles having worn or incorrect tyre pressure; 11 percent of vehicles had defective wipers and 7 percent of vehicles had safety work carried out on the vehicle’s brakes. Some vehicles needed multiple tasks carried out but the majority just had a single fault.

The RSA says it wants to make motorists aware of the fact that while their car might appear to be running well, it is worth checking regularly to ensure tyres are inflated to the correct pressure and not worn and that brakes, lights, shocks and windscreen wipers are in good working order.
