Car sales drop catastrophic for State

New car sales in Ireland could be as low as 50,000 for 2009, if the trend shown at the end of April continues.

With just 37,000 units sold in the first four months of the year, the drop compared to last year is now at 67 percent.

Top seller is Ford, followed by Toyota, VW, Nissan and Opel.

Apart from the impact on car dealerships and employment in the motor trade, the loss of VRT and VAT is catastrophic for the Government. Two years ago the dependency of the State tax revenues on motor-related taxes was estimated at between 14-16 percent -- twice the equivalent dependency in Britain.
