Half global traffic fatalities not in cars

Almost half of the estimated 1.27 million people who die in road traffic crashes each year are pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists.

That's one conclusion from the Global Status Report on Road Safety, released today by Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization, and Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York.

The study provides the first worldwide analysis of how well countries are implementing a number of effective road safety measures.

It was funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
