Chocolate and carrots racer

It can do 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds and maybe get to 170mph, but a racing car making its first competitive outing at Brand's Hatch next month is made of recycled waste and runs on chocolate.

The car has been designed at the University of Warwick and has the performance of a Formula 3 racing car, according to creator Kerry Kirwan.

Carbon fibre waste from aeroplane construction was used for the body, while the steering wheel has been made from organic residue left over from carrot soup production.

The fuel powering its diesel engine is made from chocolate and old wine.

The makers wanted to use tyres made from recycled potato starch, but safety requirements in actuaql racing means they have to use proper rubber ones.

It makes its debut race on October 17.
