Toyota secures lithium supplies

Toyota has done a deal in Argentina to secure lithium supplies for its next generation hybrid cars.

Lithium battery technology is more efficient than the nickel metal-hydride batteries currently used in the Prius hybrid which gave Toyota its lead in this kind of car. It is known that Toyota will use the Li systems in the upcoming plug-in version of the Prius.

But much of the known lithium supplies are located in the Andes, in countries such as Bolivia and Argentina. The deal is in conjunction with Australian company Orocobre.
