Plugging in smart for EVs

It looks like electric cars will in the near to mid-term future become a sizeable part of the individual transport scene.

The Irish Times reports today that four kerbside charging points will be available in Dublin from next week, ahead of a nationwide programme that will see 1,500 installed throughout the country within two-and-a-half years.

But there are ramifications for the electricity business once this builds up. Will it impact on the grid system, forcing big investment in new plant and consequent electricity price rises? If too many people decide to charge their cars during times of peak electricity use, it could force utilities to use expensive and often dirty 'peaking' power plants to meet demand, or even threaten power outages.

This piece in Technology Review details one way of managing the matter.
