A graduated driver licensing system is to be introduced before the end of the summer as a reaction to the continuing deaths of young drivers on the roads.
According to the Road Safety Authority the system will require novice drivers to take a specified number of lessons from a qualified instructor, and to keep a log book of hours spent practicing.
Statistics show that inexperienced drivers, young men aged 17 to 24, are most at risk of dying on the roads.
It is estimated that the new system will cost each learner driver at least €700.
The move has been welcomed by AA Ireland. The organisation's director of policy Conor Faughnan said it had been proposed by AA Ireland some time ago. But he added that this aspect is 'only part of the problem'.
