The Gran Coupe will follow next year's launch of the 2-door 6-Series Coupe and is expected to roll off the lines in 2012.
It follows the reveal of a concept for the 4-dor at the Beijing Auto Show in April.
The powertrains will be similar to those in the 5-, 6- and 7-Series cars, and the pricing will be in line with the 6-Series.
BMW says the car is aimed at the potential buyers of a 7-Series who want to drive themselves rather than be chauffeured.
