The ESB has launched electric car charge point at South Mall, in Cork city.
The launch is part of the ESB's plan to build the charging infrastructure nationwide to meet the Government target of 10 per cent of all vehicles to be electric by 2020.
Charge points have also been installed on the Glanmire Road and at the Cork Institute of Technology.
Cork is the third city after Dublin and Galway to have public on-street charge points installed and this will be followed by a rollout of charge points nationwide in the coming weeks. The ESB is installing 3,500 charge points nationally by the end of next year - a total of 2,000 domestic units and a further 1,500 on-street charge points. Up to 30 fast chargers will also be installed by the end of next year.
The on-street charge points will be located throughout the Republic and at least one will be built for every town with a population of more than 1,500. Some 30 fast chargers will be built by 2011 and will be located along all major inter urban routes, approximately 60km apart.
Domestic charge points are also being installed in the homes of participants of ESB ecars trial in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Limerick, Ennis and Sligo.
