Interim figures for the 2010 Scrappage Scheme show that close to 17,500 cars were bought under the scheme.
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry says it expects that a further 10,000 will be sold under the extended scheme, which runs until 30 June.
Non-scrappage sales increased by 14,000 to 71,000 units compared to the 57,000 in 2009. SIMI attributes this directly to the increased footfall through showrooms as a result of scrappage.
The biggest beneficiary of the scrappage was Renault, which gained almost a fifth of the sales through the scheme.
Ford came second with 13.14 percent share, followed by Toyota with 10.83 percent. Skoda and Volkswagen filled out the top five with 9.64/9.21 percent respectively.
Sales held steady through the year until October, with the biggest scrappage month being March.
