Mazda is pushing its way into the electric vehicle market with a variant of its Mazda2 which will roll out on the roads of Japan next year.
Mazda says the car will initially be leased out to local government bodies and fleet customers in Japan, and claim it will have a driving range of 200kms on a charge.
That is a significantly greater range than the various EVs already on sale or imminent.
The Mazda2 EV programme is designed to enhance the company's knowledge of EV usage requirements and electric drive technologies. But the company is continuing to expend most of its effort on its various Skyactiv technologies to increase the efficiencies of its traditional powertrains.
