Mini ups its diesels game

Current 1.6 Mini diesel models aren't by any means slouches, writes Brian Byrne, but now the brand has stuffed a 2.0 diesel into that space under the hood, which among other things gives an 8.1 seconds sprint to 100 km/h.

Designated the SD, the engine will be available across the model's range, and offers fuel frugality with CO2 emissions as low as 114g/km.

With 143hp and a thumping 305Nm of torque, it outpulls even the JCW hot hatch variants.

Weight-saving techniques and a new very lightweight 6-speed manual gearbox completes the specification.

No Irish details yet, but watch this space through the spring.
