The Irish motor trade must have 'early engagement' with Government on the issue of the restructuring of VRT planned for 2013, the President of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry has warned.
Eddie Murphy, who is also MD of Ford Ireland, noted that the way the last changes were introduced led to a very disrupted market, and such upheaval shouldn't be allowed to happen next time around.
"We need a window of at least one year to iron out implications for residuals, buy-backs and stocking costs," he said. "For that to happen, we require proposals by the end of this year."
He added that a system based on usage could be a real incentive for consumers to be even more responsible in relation to car use.
