Flying in to the Rock can be iffy
If you fly to the south of Spain via Gibraltar, which many UK residents do, writes Brian Byrne, you need to be aware that this particular outpost is subject to weather problems more than most airports.
That's because the famous rock, alongside which the single runway runs in from over the sea, makes the accurate use of normal instrument landing systems impossible.
So, unless pilots can have a direct visual onto the runway during bad weather, they will likely divert to Malaga.
That will mean an extra hour and a half or more by taxi or coach to get the 137 kilometres to Gibraltar. Of course, the airline will make transfer arrangements, but it's worth factoring in if your timetable is tight.
