The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has released June sales figures which show that new car sales were up 31 per cent compared to last June.
The Scrappage Scheme ended last Thursday saw 29,371 cars bought through the scheme.
The figures show 77,134 new cars were sold so far this year, up 14 per cent on last year. Toyota is the top selling brand so far this year but the Ford Focus is the best selling model.
Some 91 per cent of new cars sold were in C02 bands A & B, the lowest emission bands, compared to 77 per cent last year.
Some 71 per cent of new cars sold so far this year were diesel. Sales of Light Commercial Vehicles (vans etc) are up 25 per cent.
SIMI say the Scrappage Scheme has been a huge success with over €100 million generated from the scheme in VAT and VRT (after government discounts). But figures show that most new cars bought this year were non Scrappage cars.
