First Drive: Range Rover Evoque
The most eagerly awaited vehicle in years is about to hit our shores, writes Trish Whelan.
Nothing else looks quite like it, feels like it, or drives like it and when the first Range Rover Evoques arrive here next week, they are guaranteed to turn heads, with people proclaiming "I want one."
This is a compact SUV with agility, space and performance matched with luxurious comfort whether on or off road.
Yesterday saw us doing some serious off-roading in the Welsh hills using all the features of the car's Terrain Response, letting the car almost drive itself up and down steep hills, over mud and ruts, grass and gravel - all under the expert tuition of the instructors from Land Rover Experience.
Prices for this smallest and lightest Range Rover ever start from €40,975 for the 5-door 150hp version while the coupe 4wd TD4 150hp starts from €42,540. Tax bands begin at C.
Range Rover Ireland's General Manager Eddie Kavanagh said at the Evoque's official launch in Liverpool yesterday, that the interest in the car has been 'phenomenal'. "I've never experienced anything like it in all my years in the motor industry," he said, adding that it is an emotional purchase as the car appeals to the senses. "I think given the choice between an ordinary saloon and something as exciting and capable as the Evoque, it's a very quick decision."
Eddie Kavanagh believes most sales will be diesels and will be conquest sales from other brands. Petrol versions will be available to special order but will be subject to €1,000 in annual road tax. He also expects manuals to outsell automatics.
Irish actress Amy Huberman will be a brand ambassador for the Range Rover Evoque in Ireland.
