BMW prepares for another Irish winter

BMW is again offering its specialist Winter Tyre programme designed to help drivers get the best on-road performance from their car during the winter months, regardless of weather conditions, writes Trish Whelan.

BMW customers will be able to try the benefits of winter tyres through its Winter Driver Training programme delivered by Rally School Ireland at their purpose-built circuit in County Monaghan.

Changing to winter tyres is already common place in Europe. Summer tyres operate best at temperatures above 7 degrees C but once the temperature drops nearer to freezing their rubber hardens and in true wintry conditions of snow and ice, tyre performance is even less effective.

Even if we have a mild winter, winter tyre users benefit from reduced tyre wear and increased wet weather grip and performance. Winter tyres have bigger tread blocks with larger open channels helping to reduce the risk of skidding on wet surfaces; BMW claim accidents are reduced and braking distances improve by up to 20 percent on icy roads and up to 10 per cent in the dry.

Prices vary by model but start at €945 for a complete set of four winter wheels and tyres on a BMW 1 Series (pictured above). A half day BMW Winter Driver training course for one of their customers is €175 incl VAT with group booking rates available from Rally School Ireland. This programme is suited also to companies with fleets.
