Although SEAT and BMW are quickly closing the gap, Chevrolet is not prepared to abdicate their WTCC throne with two of the Cruzes celebrating on the double in sunny Valencia winning both races in the second round of the World Touring Car Championship.
Yvan Muller (pictured above) dominated Race 1 and Alain Menu (pictured below) took an action-packed Race 2 after a thrilling final fight. This is the first time in WTCC history that a driver won the first three races in a row.
With Rob Huff finishing 4th (behind Tarquini and Coronel and Menu taking 5th after starting from 9th on the grid), and 6th respectively, and the three RML-run Cruzes scoring points in both races, it was a very positive journey to Spain for the team, which has extended its lead in both Manufacturers' and Drivers' championships.
The second race was one of the most exciting ever, with Alain Menu capable of keeping at bay a bunch of four BMW cars.
Menu started in 2nd but dropped a place before quickly passing Engstler and D-Aste to take the lead. A slippery portion of the track created some trouble in the closing laps allowing Coronel to catch up with Menu. Contact between the two in the very last lap sent Alain into the grass but the impressive Swiss recovered well to take the chequered flag. Huff finished the race 6th and Muller 8th.
Team Aon's Ford Focus cars are also making steps forward and for the first time James Nash was running close to the point-scoring positions.
The championship resumes at Marrakech, Morocco, on 15th April for rounds 5 and 6.
