A 'rate my driving' app is under development by a US telephone company which could help parents keep an eye on their teenagers' driving habits, writes Brian Byrne.
The system could also be used to check if a particular driving incident was related to phone use or other distraction.
The actual work on what could become a smartphone app is being done by researchers in Israel on behalf of telcomms giant AT&T. The system analyses data both from the phone's GPS and the various computerised sensors built into the car.
It is suggested that it could also be used over time to check if elderly drivers' motoring safety is deteriorating.
