New Jag will target BMW, Porsche

A spiritual successor to the iconic Jaguar E-Type will debut at the Paris Motor Show in September and will be aimed squarely at competition such as the BMW Z4 and Porsche models, writes Brian Byrne.

To be called the F-Type, the 2-seater will also be the big cat brand's smallest car in more than 40 years.

No less than Enzo Ferrari described the E-Type, launched in 1961, as 'the most beautiful car ever built'.

The F-Type will be the production version of the C-X16 Concept, though it won't have the hybrid powertrain which that car had.

It will be launched first as a convertible, and one of its target models will be Porsche's third generation Boxter Roadster and the Carrera Cabriolet.

Jaguar was bought in 2008 for $2.8bn from Ford by Tata Motors of India.
