Learners in fatal crashes

Unaccompanied learner drivers have been involved in one in every 15 fatal road crashes over the last three years.

Department of Justice figures show that 45 such drivers were in fatal road crashes over the last 40 months, and 74 more were involved in serious injury collisions.

During March and April some 950 learner motorists were caught driving unaccompanied or not displaying L plates. Of these, 671 were given a caution and the balance face prosecutions and fines of up to €1,000 for a first offence.
