Renault is planning to develop an upmarket brand like Nissan's Infiniti, writes Brian Byrne.
According to Chief Operating Officer Carlos Tavares the company would initially offer upscale variants of existing models, as Citroen has done with its DS series. Renault's sub-brand would be named Initiale.
In a second phase, unique models would be produced under the Initiale brand. Tavares was speaking in in interview with Automotive News Europe.
Renault's last foray into the premium market, with the Vel Satis from 2002-2009, was a failure.
