New car sales down 12 percent

So far this year, 76,630 new cars have been sold, a drop of 12 percent on this time last year (87,163).

The latest figures from SIMI also show the Ford Focus is the top selling car Year-to-date with 3,591 units sold which represents a drop of 13.62 percent on 2011. In second place is Nissan's Qashqai with 3,256, closely followed by VW Golf on 3,237, Toyota Avensis (2,856), Toyota Yaris (2,367), Skoda Octavia (2,299), Ford Fiesta (2,099), VW Passat Saloon (2,057), Toyota Auris (1,828) and Renault Fluence (1,812).

Only the Qashai, Yaris and Octavia registered an increase in sales so far this year against the same period for 2011.

Some 2,487 new cars were sold for the month of September, which is 10 percent less than last September (2,767).

For September, the Volkswagen brand was the top selling car maker followed by Ford and Toyota. Top selling models were 1. BMW 3 series; 2. Ford Focus; 3. Skoda Octavia.

Van sales in September were down 4 percent on the same time last year while truck sales in September remained unchanged on 2011.
