Survey finds Skoda best for re-sale value

A report by Motorcheck.ie which compared almost 12,530 pricing samples between January 2009 and July 2012 showed that Czech car maker Skoda provided the greatest return on investment of any brand, writes Brian Byrne.

The research focused on the best selling model variants across four categories including both petrol and diesel options for small hatch, mid range hatch, mid range saloon, and large saloon vehicles. It showed that Skoda claimed No. 1 spot in three of these categories, best diesel option for small hatch (Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI), mid range saloon (Octavia 1.9TDI), and large saloon (Superb 1.9TDI Greenline). The Superb is pictured above.

Commenting on the rankings, Raymond Leddy of Skoda Ireland said the brand's used cars are 'always in demand as trade in vehicles from our network of retailers'.

Over the three year period, the outstanding Skoda models retained 67% (Fabia), 62% (Octavia) and 61% (Superb) of their original value.

The results show that buying a small diesel hatchback is the shrewdest decision when it comes to residual values as they on average retain 62 percent of their new value after three years.
