Facial recognition for driving safety?

The French Peugeot-Citroen group is involved in the development of facial recognition systems which it is eventually hoped will help make driving safer, writes Brian Byrne.

The systems will be based on cameras that can track eye movements, and, for instance, work out which direction a driver might be looking at a time when other sensors indicate a potential incident looming.

They might also be able to monitor whether a driver is getting sleepy, or generally more inattentive as a journey progresses, and provide them with warnings.

The research is being carried out in conjunction with the Switzerland based École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne. The French carmaker provided a prototyping platform to the project, to evaluate where best a monitoring camera might be placed.
