The anti-collision systems which are rapidly becoming a featured option on a range of models from BMW, Ford, and Volvo among others, are available as dashboard kits for aftermarket, writes Brian Byrne.
The camera-operated systems are manufactured by Jerusalem-based Mobileye, which has been demonstrating the post-fitted units that recognise threat situations in traffic from sudden-stopping cars to pedestrians and cyclists unexpectedly getting in the way.
The units have an estimated price of around €600, including fitting. In Israel itself, an insurance company is proposing to provide the systems free to young drivers in return for lower insurance premiums.
A version using the owner's smartphone is also available.
