A system of prioritising intersections for various classes of vehicles has gone under test in seven European cities, writes Brian Byrne.
The use of Energy Efficient Intersection Control is part of the EU-sponsored Compass4D programme which began this month in Bordeaux, Copenhagen, Eindhoven-Helmond, Newcastle, Thessaloniki, Verona and Vigo.
The pilot programme will enable drivers of buses, emergency vehicles, trucks, taxis, electric vehicles and private cars which are connected to the 'intelligent' intersections, to get priority.
The idea is that they will have less stops, and therefore be more fuel- and time-efficient. Over the seven cities, some 574 users and 334 vehicles will be involved in the three-year project.
