New Honda CR-V scoops big award

Honda's new CR-V, recently launched in this country, has scooped the prestigious '4x4 of the Year' honour from Total 4x4 Magazine in the UK, writes Trish Whelan.

It won the prize following fierce competition in the Medium SUV segment.

This fourth generation CR-V is built in the carmaker's state-of-the-art production facility in Swindon in the UK and was launched to Irish dealerships just two months ago.

The tests ranged from interior quality, comfort and practicality to repeated drives of a set road route by different judges. The publication's editor, Alan Kidd, said "Seldom has a new 4x4 put such a big tick in so many boxes. It didn't just impress us - it made our jaws drop."

Frank Kennedy of Universal Honda here says the win 'is a fantastic way to start 2013'. He hopes it will be the first award of many.

The new Honda CR-V is on sale here since October and is priced from €39,295 for the 2.2 i-DTEC SE model with annual road tax of €390.

The AWD system operates from startup but the vehicle slips immediately into 2WD if it senses no traction loss.

Around 7,000 units of CR-V have been sold here since the first CR-V was launched in 1996.
