Orange tyres would make roads safer

Here's a neat idea to cut down on the use of tyres with illegal tread depths, writes Brian Byrne. When they're worn, they go orange.

The concept tyre system is the invention of a pair of inventors, Gao Fenglin and Zhou Buyi. They hope that their Discolor Tyre concept, which features a layer of bright-orange rubber that is moulded and embedded within the tyre, will be taken up by some major manufacturers.

It would certainly help in enforcing the use of safer tyres. While the legal limit here is 1.6mm, it is understood that traffic police don't have the equipment or resources to do regular proper spot checks on motorists' tyres. Just looking out for the orange tyres would help them enormously.

Not to mention encouraging motorists themselves to make their wheels legal.
