Ford has redefined the acronym SUV from sport utility vehicle to 'smart' utility vehicle, writes Brian Byrne.
That's the underline to the launch of the new generation Kuga, which comes with the options of the most 'most technology ever offered on on a Ford vehicle in Europe'.
In the Irish context, Kuga has been quite successful for Ford, with some 700 units sold last year. But the importance of the commercial version was underlined last night by Ford Ireland MD Eddie Murphy, when he noted that around 500 of those were van versions.
Across Europe, the Kuga is riding a wave of growth in the SUV segment, one which will will grow with the arrival next year of the small EcoSport and the large Edge into the brand's range.
The new Kuga will be sold in Ireland from a starting price of €33,450, with Zetec and Titanium grades. Powertrains will ber 140hp/163hp 2.0 diesels and a choice of 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
Improvements in the efficiency of the engines mean that the new Kuga goes to Band B2 for the 2WD entry level, and Band C for the 4WD entry.
