The one bright light in a commercial vehicles market which is down by more than 18 percent this year on the same period in 2012, is Land Rover, writes Trish Whelan.
With the commercial version of its Land Rover Discovery sales up by more than 77 percent, the model is now third best seller in the light commercial vehicle market in Ireland.
Overall, the Land Rover brand is in fourth place in the sector with 343 vehicles sold to date this year.
"We're very pleased with the performance in what's an extremely difficult environment," says Eddie Kavanagh of Land Rover Ireland. "The word has gone out about the specification levels and the reliability of the Discovery particularly and it seems to have become the commercial SUV of choice. The addition of some new dealers in Kildare, Limerick and North Dublin has also helped."
Top of the sector is the Ford Transit with 582 vehicles, followed by VW Caddy with 511. Both models sales are down by 21 percent compared to last year.
Nissan has also shown a growth in numbers with 287 vehicles, an increase of almost 3 percent on 2012. Otherwise, Citroen was the least hit by the downturn with its sales down by 2.3 percent.
