Logging near-misses could prevent big crashes

Close calls importantA New York transportation advocacy group is inviting local motorists to upload details of 'nearly' crashes, as a way of mapping potentially dangerous infrastructure, writes Brian Byrne.

The group, Transportation Alternatives, says that such near-misses are a valuable indicator of an unsafe street ... but the data just doesn't exist.

Actual car crashes are generally logged by authorities and this information can be used to highlight so-called 'black spots'. Transportation Alternatives believe the near miss and minor crash data currently unlogged could have real value in heading off more serious crashes.

The group has set up a website where motorists can log these events themselves.
