Translator cheating fears prompt call for ban

The Driving Standards Agency in Britain is seeking a ban on the use of translators by those doing their driving tests, writes Brian Byrne.

This follows the revelation in the Manchester Evening Standard that more than 3,100 learners in the Greater Manchester Area used translators when doing their tests in 2012, double the number in 2010.

The DSA is concerned that many new drivers using translators may not even have a basic knowledge of road signs used in the UK.

And local driving instructors are reported as saying there's a potential for cheating 'because you don't know what the translator is saying'.

The DSA is calling for a regulation that all driving tests must be conducted in English or Welsh.
