Four in ten cars on Irish roads may be operating with tyres at 'dangerous' pressure levels, writes Brian Byrne.
That's a conclusion of a recent survey carried out by Continental Tyres Ireland in conjunction with Maxol service stations.
The survey details were given today by Tom Dennigan, the new general manager of Continental here. Other findings included the fact that one in six cars checked had tyres below the 1.6mm tread legal limit, and almost half were below the recommended 3mm depth.
Tests by all manufacturers, and by independent safety organisations, show a big difference in safety performance between new tyres and those with tread of 3mm.
The latest survey, carried out by Advance Pitstop technicians at a number of Maxol service stations, concentrated on passenger cars who were at the stations just for fuelling.
It also found that one in four motorists never checked their tyre pressures, and one in two women never do.
