If you say 'RSA' to the person on the till at an Applegreen Service Station this Friday (tomorrow), you will be handed a free cup of coffee, writes Trish Whelan.
This is part of the (RSA) Road Safety Authority / An Garda campaign to stop drivers nodding off at the wheel. It follows a survey by the RSA on its Facebook page on Monday 29 July to Wednesday 31 July, questioning over 233 drivers to determine the type of countermeasures used to tackle driver fatigue.
60 percent of drivers try to stay awake using unworkable means such as opening windows, singing or talking to themselves and turning on the radio.
The free coffee will be offered to drivers between 2pm and 8pm at 17 participating service stations around the country (listed below).
International research suggests that driver fatigue could be a contributory factor in 1 in 5 driver deaths in Ireland. So this silent killer could have been a contributing factor in almost 215 road deaths in the past 5 years.
The advice is, if you are fighting sleep at the wheel, to stop immediately. If possible, drink a cup of coffee or caffeine drink but most importantly, take a 15 to 20 minute nap. Stretch your legs and get some fresh air.
