Peugeot RCZ R here in January

When the Peugeot RCZ R arrives here in January 2014, it will be the most powerful road-going car the brand has ever sold, writes Trish Whelan.

Inspired by the Peugeot RCZ Racing Cup track car, this new range-topping two-seater sports coupé is powered by a 1.6 THP turbocharged petrol engine developing 270bhp.

It represents a considerable boost in power over the RCZ 1.6 200bhp launched in September and will sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds.

Features include a strengthened six-speed manual transmission, uprated clutch, larger intercooler and new twin-scroll turbocharger. The front and rear track have been widened to boost traction. Other upgrades include revised dampers settings, increased stiffness in the springs and anti-roll bar. Aerodynamics have also been improved, thanks to a new fixed boot spoiler which aids rear downforce. The car rides on unique two-tone 19-inch alloy wheels which feature red calipers at the front bearing the Peugeot Sport name.

The RCZ R made its international debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last July and we officially saw it at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It will be launched across Europe from January 2014 with an expected annual production of around 3,000 units. It is available in four colours - Moroccan Red, Nera Black, Mercury Grey and Opal White.

Full pricing and specifications for the Irish market will be announced in December when the order book opens.
